For many parts of the country, winter weather is here, and everyone is either embracing or coping with the cold in their own way. Some people love racing down a mountain after a heavy snowfall or relaxing in front of a fireplace with some hot coco and board games. For others, winter means shoveling the driveway, battling a cold that never seems to go away, and paying a fortune to stay warm.
Across the U.S. temperatures can vary drastically, and as it turns out, some states do enjoy the colder months quite a bit more than others. To help explore which areas enjoy the winter months the most, 麻豆原创 looked at MSN polling data which asked over 800,000 readers from all 50 states and the nation's capital how they generally feel about wintry weather, what they look forward to the most, and what they dread.
For each place, we also included plenty of activities and festivals to help locals and tourists enjoy the winter months. The states are ranked from those who love winter the most to those who would rather skip it and go straight to spring.
#51. North Dakota

For a state where average winter temperatures dip into the negatives, it may not come as a surprise that only 12% of North Dakota respondents indicated a love for wintry weather. Still, residents have access to unique winter experiences like dogsledding in Prairie Isle and icefishing at Devils Lake. In January, Fargo kicks off their 鈥3 days of outdoor activities like snow golf, cross country skiing, and other events.

Even with the beautiful ice caves of Wisconsin鈥檚 Apostle Islands, only 12% of respondents said they love winter. The super cold state is stuck in single digit lows from December through February, but there鈥檚 still quite a few cold weather activities including dogsledding, snowmobiling, and curling. In early February, Hudson hosts the , a hot air balloon festival along the St. Croix River.

Even though the average temperature in winter is a relatively mild 29 degrees, only 13% of respondents in Indiana say they love the winter. It鈥檚 also the ideal time of year for spotting bald eagles, and Indiana has no shortage of state parks to scope the skies from. There are also plenty of activities for kids and adults alike such as sledding, ice skating, and snow tubing.

Even though not many people in Michigan say they love winter, there are plenty of ways for everyone to warm up during the coldest season. To get into the holiday spirit, there鈥檚 the in December, and you can get all your shopping done in the idyllic Bavarian town of Frankenmuth. In February, Detroit hosts the festival with live music, ice skating, and ziplines.

Most people in Illinois did not say that they love winter, but there are still a ton of ways to embrace and enjoy the cold. Rockford hosts the in January, and over 7,000 brave souls dive into Lake Michigan to raise money for Special Olympics Chicago as part of the in March. Many find the best way to warm up is with a cup of hot chocolate at Mindy's Hot Chocolate in Chicago.

In Ohio, there are numerous ways to cope with the winter temperatures, which are frequently below freezing. Kids can get into the Christmas spirit and hop on the from Rockside Station in Independence, or check out the Alum Creek State Park Festival of Lights. Even with average winter temperatures in the high teens, Maine has something for everyone. For the adventurous, there鈥檚 skiing and snowboarding on mountain, and winter hiking and snowshoeing in Acadia National Park. And for those who would rather stay indoors, there are many winter resorts and spas to get pampered. There鈥檚 also Maine鈥檚 Restaurant Week in early March, where locals get their fill of sweet winter lobster.

In Vermont, the average temperature in winter is below 20 degrees, so it鈥檚 not surprising that most people don鈥檛 love winter--32% of respondents don鈥檛 care for it, and 25% hate it. But, there are plenty of breweries and wineries to spend snowy days getting warm inside with friends. For those who want to get outside, there鈥檚 Alpine and Nordic skiing, and you can even track a moose if you can find tracks after a good snowfall.

New Hampshire comes in at #43 in the US ranking of states from warmest to coldest, so it鈥檚 no surprise that they rank in the same place on this list. Locals battle the cold by staying active and going snowmobiling, snowshoeing, and sleigh riding. Dartmouth students enjoy the annual with bonfires, polar bear swims, and 鈥渉uman dogsled鈥 races.

South Dakota is also home to a ton of winter sports, including snowmobiling, cross country skiing, and hiking. Not many respondents say that they love winter, but they do look forward to getting outside to take in the beautiful scenery. in the Black Hills is a great place to find some peace and quiet, and maybe even a few buffalo.

Only 14% of respondents in Missouri say they love winter, but many cope with the cold weather by heading to the Brew n View to watch movies with specialty hot drinks in Columbia. All the major ballet companies perform Tchaikovsky鈥檚 Nutcracker every year, to get everyone into the holiday spirit. The Missouri Botanical Garden in St. Louis is transformed into a spectacle of lights for during the last six weeks of the year.

But there鈥檚 still a lot of great mountains for skiing and snowboarding, from Ski Butternut to Blue Hills. For those who would prefer to get cozy by the fire with a good book, the in Boston will satisfy the hungriest readers. On February 23rd and 24th, Lowell hosts their annual with free ice skating, fire dancers, craft beer, and great food.

There aren't many people in Rhode Island who say they love winter, but they do have plenty of ways to stay warm and active. There are several places for ice skating, indoor and outdoor, such as the in Providence. They also have many museums for people of all ages to explore, from the to the Rhode Island School of Design Museum.

In Nebraska, the average winter temperature is around 25 degrees, and they get an average of 30 inches of snow per year. This means lots of time stuck indoors, which they don鈥檛 love. One way they get outside to brave the elements is in the annual Polar Bear Tank Race in March, where teams dress up in costumes and raft down the Middle Loup River in a metal stock tank.

Minnesota is the 3rd coldest state, with an average winter temperature of just 12 degrees, but many Minnesotans embrace the cold anyway. In Walker, the is named after a rather unattractive bottom-dwelling fish. At this quirky event in February, more than ten times the population of Walker gather on Leech Lake for the eelpout fish derby, ice rugby, a polar plunge, and a fish fry of the event鈥檚 namesake, naturally. Most of respondents living in D.C. don't love the winter weather, but there are plenty of ways to stay busy and warm in the capital city. The Washington Ballet performs an American Revolution version of The Nutcracker in Georgetown, featuring George Washington and King George III. Christmas shoppers head to the , one of the best in the country, and on warmer nights, families check out at the Smithsonian National Zoo.

Outside the city, there are beautiful cabins in the Adirondack Mountains, perfect for getting cozy by a fireplace or exploring the snowy trails.

While winter may not be the favorite season of most people in New Jersey, there are many activities for everyone in the family to enjoy.
